Day 16 turned out to be the best of the trip..so far. We were able to take our time getting ready this morning, clean up a little and then spend a little time down at the village. At noon we went south of Jackson about 10 miles to a small ranch for an “Introduction to Rodeo” lesson. We started off with our horses and rode a short trail to a large riding corral and immediately walked through the basics of barrel racing. We were able to ride at our own paces a few times before really letting it go. Each effort trying to improve on our previous time. After the third barrel you head for home and the horses were ready to run. It was quite a thrill. Certainly helps to have well trained horses. All three of my children really pushed themselves out of their comfort zones and I think surprised themselves. After the barrels we took on the roping. Started with a dummy steer on the ground, then progressed to a moving dummy pulled by a four wheeler. We were all gathered on our horses when out of another corral came a live steer. We were all a little taken back thinking we were not ready for this. Fortunately, we were not expected to rope the steer but instead practice herding the steer around the arena. The steer headed back into the corral when we finished and we could all sprint for home. I cannot say enough about how much fun we had and the growth that each of us experienced. Julie enjoyed the show and was our photographer/videographer. We have several pictures to show but the real footage is in the video. As soon as I learn how to condense the video for emailing purposes I will post some of them. Made a trip to the grocery store on the way home and finished the day off with an competitive game of scrabble.
